As educators, we are well aware that the world of Career and Technical Education (CTE) is constantly evolving. Upcoming changes in accountability and other CTE requirements have placed an even greater spotlight on CTE programs, inevitably adding another layer of responsibility for CTE teachers and administrators. Thankfully, we are no strangers to change and have always adapted to better serve our students. While the challenges may seem overwhelming, every strong tree begins as a small seed, and every successful CTE program begins with educators willing to invest in the growth of their students. After all, helping students become productive, contributing members of society is the ultimate goal, isn't it?
With 14 Career Clusters and more than 60 Programs of Study available, students now have more opportunities than ever before. Career-ready Industry-Based Certifications are becoming increasingly prevalent across the state, providing students with valuable options immediately after graduation. For many students, these opportunities are truly life-changing; they simply need someone to open the door. CTE programs provide that opportunity.
While serving at my previous district, I had the privilege of witnessing how earning a Tier II Industry-Based Certification completely changed the trajectory of a soon-to-be graduate. The confidence it instilled, the sense of purpose it created, and the belief that they could succeed became the catalyst for a brighter future. In that moment, CTE wasn't just another program; it was the turning point in a student's life. It reminded me that CTE matters, not only for that student's future but for countless others. We can never forget that every skill learned and every certification earned represents another branch of growth in a student's future.
In Texas, the goal is for at least 60% of Texans to earn a degree, certificate, or other postsecondary credential by 2030. To support that vision, the Texas Education Agency has established accountability measures that place College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) and the opportunities provided through CTE on equal footing with STAAR performance. As accountability expectations continue to evolve through 2030, I encourage you and your administrators to take full advantage of the resources available through the Region 7 CTE team.
One resource that proved invaluable during my time in a school district was the Region 7 CTE Catalog. It became an essential tool for counselors, administrators, families, teachers, and me as we guided students through career pathways and postsecondary opportunities. I encourage you to explore the catalog, ask questions, and lean on our team for support. We are here to help you navigate change, connect you with valuable resources, and provide answers so you can focus on what matters most: your students and the programs that help them succeed.
Accountability measures may continue to change, but the roots of successful education remain the same: preparing students for meaningful futures. As we remain Rooted in Growth, let us continue planting seeds of opportunity, nurturing student potential, and cultivating programs that will strengthen our schools, communities, and workforce for years to come.
