An Exciting Day for Head Start

Blanca Enriquez

by Dr. Blanca Enriquez

The new year brings excitement for the new Head Start Program Performance Standards.

The new school year is beginning, and we also have a new beginning for Head Start that will be felt in programs across the country. This time of year, children's emotions are written on their faces for all to see. We all can see their excitement as they go to Head Start – some attending for the very first time. Parents are excited (and a little nervous) for their kids. They are also excited to learn and grow themselves, through the opportunities and comprehensive services Head Start provides. Teachers, home visitors, bus drivers, directors, family service workers, custodians, and the rest of the Head Start team – everyone is excited for the new school year to begin.-->Click Here to read more

First Childcare Center in East Texas Completes Texas Rising Star Certification

Sandra Robinson, director of L & M Christian Daycare and Learning Center in Marshall, was presented with the certificate stating that the center has maintained their 4-Star rating in the Texas Rising Star program on May 8, 2015. The Texas Rising Star program is a voluntary, quality-based child care rating system of child care providers participating in the Texas Workforce Commission's subsidized child care program. It is available to Licensed Center and Licensed and Registered Child Care Home providers who meet the certification criteria. The providers that voluntarily achieve TRS provider certification are offering quality care that exceeds the State's Minimum Child Care Licensing Standards for director and staff qualifications, caregiver-child interactions, age-appropriate curricula and activities, nutrition and indoor/outdoor activities, and parent involvement and education. Texas Rising Star providers are in a position to contribute positively to the early development of the children they serve on a daily basis.  Congratulations to Sandra Robinson and all of the staff at the L & M Christian Daycare and Learning Center.

Did You Know?

  • Did You Know all children need a healthy breakfast?  As children head back to school, this is the perfect time to emphasize how a healthy breakfast is crucial in providing children the nutrients and energy they need to succeed in school. Studies show that breakfast eaters tend to have higher school attendance, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomachaches in the morning, which means fewer trips to the school nurse. Children who eat breakfast are also less likely to be overweight and more likely to get enough calcium. All Head Start children are offered breakfast regardless of the time they arrive to school. For more information on the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast contact Gail Thomas, Region 7 ESC Head Start Nutrition Coordinator at 903-988-7629.

  • Did you know when extreme challenging behaviors arise, Head Start teachers can enter a Mental Health referral in the Head Start software tracking system that triggers support from the Head Start Mental Health Team

  • Head Start’s dietitian meets with the families of children with food allergies during the school year to help them understand their child’s food allergy and how to cope with new information and the new dietary guidelines for their families.
