Dyslexia has been increasingly present on everyone’s mind over the last couple of years. Discussions in school districts have increased along with efforts to clarify misconceptions surrounding dyslexia including indication factors and diagnosis.
In 2016, Region 7 ESC staff continued to increase their efforts to educate and provide support to district dyslexia specialists. Region 7 began offering the Texas Dyslexia Identification Academy to the regions’ dyslexia specialists and representatives. The academy explores the elements of reading identified dyslexia and outlined the process for dyslexia evaluation.
In an effort to continue the education and support for district dyslexia specialist Region 7 ESC Curriculum and Instruction Specialist, Angela Venters developed a dyslexia round table session in January 2017. The round table allowed discussion and networking among peers. It also allowed small and rural districts with one dyslexia specialist, an opportunity to bounce ideas off others. They also discussed dyslexia issues, concerns, and education in their districts.
“We found that our smaller districts really needed the ability to network with like professionals and specialist,” Venters said. “The round table provided a very dynamic opportunity for participants and our feedback was overwhelmingly positive.”
Due to the success of the pilot round table session, Venters decided to offer a round table session each semester. The next round table is scheduled for Friday, September 30 and has reached maximum capacity. A spring semester session is being offered Friday, February 2 and registration for that session is now open.
Discussions during the round table include, parent education, teacher education, STAAR updates and dyslexia technology plans. House Bill 1886, which is directly related to dyslexia testing, the designation of a dyslexia specialist by the Texas Education Agency and the development of a list of training opportunities for educators regarding dyslexia by the TEA will also be discussed.
