Wise Elementary Promotes Interactive Learning
04/17/2017

One Region 7 school sets the stage for interactive learning and provides its students with unique learning and expressive opportunities.

Wise Elementary in Chapel Hill ISD is in its fourth year of the Magnet Arts Program. The program provides students specialized instruction in a variety of Fine Arts areas including music, art, drama, dance and physical education. Each day, the students spend one class period in a different fine arts class.

Each year the school puts on 5 to 6 large productions and this year their 5th graders are responsible for every aspect of the production. The responsibilities include script writing, set design, project display designs, costume designs, lighting, sounds, auditions, marketing, publications and many more.

According to Kimberly Walton, who teaches drama, art and gifted and talented at Wise Elementary, the exposure to the fine arts that her students receive directly benefits them not only socially but also academically.  “The students here are involved in interactive learning where their academics are brought to life. This allows for an increase in comprehension of concepts and skills,” Walton said.

Walton also said that through the program, students are exposed to creative outlets that they might not otherwise have been involved in. “I have so many success stories where students who may have struggled in academics or social situations discovered a hidden talent or passion that they didn’t even know they had. Once they discovered this, it changed them and directly benefited all other aspects of their life and built confidence.”

Currently the campus has around 550 students enrolled in the program.  Applications to attend the school are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
